Frugal Organizing Makes The Most of What You Have
Albuquerque/Santa Fe, NM. Getting and staying organized doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on fancy filing systems, containers or other expensive storage paraphernalia. Members of Professional Organizers of New Mexico can help you set up systems that not only help your life and work run more smoothly, but that will save you money by recycling and reusing what you already have.
Carolyn Taylor, owner of Organize Your Life, says that the first steps in organizing – sorting and purging – will usually yield plenty of containers to control your stuff. Plus, by purging, you’ll end up with less to corral in the first place. “Reusing file folders, shoe and check boxes, mismatched cups and saucers, baskets and other items for drawer dividers in the office, kitchen, bathroom and in dresser drawers is a smart way to go,” she says. “You liked these items enough to buy them in the first place, so why not re-use them. Then you don’t need to buy something else that can serve the same purpose.”
Elizabeth Tawney Gross, Certified Professional Organizer® and owner of Organizing for Everyday, agrees. “Repurposing old dressers to store bath and linens table linens is a wonderful idea. You can also use a tall trashcan to hold wrapping paper tubes, and empty facial tissue boxes as plastic bag holders. A new coat of paint for the furniture, or covering the boxes with contact paper turns each into a design element for your home or office, too.”
Here are other tips to organize frugally:
- Use old tool chests as storage for craft or hobby supplies.
- Shot glasses or teacups without handles hold jewelry, bathroom items like Q-tips, safety pins or hair clips.
- Wrapping paper remnants make great shelf and drawer liners.

Professional Organizers Save You Money
Albuquerque/Santa Fe, NM. The unsettling economic climate of the country right now has put the spotlight on ways that families and businesses can save money. Members of Professional Organizers of New Mexico can help you set up systems that not only help your life and work run more smoothly, but will save you money in the process.
“Being organized makes it easier to pay your bills on time so you don’t ruin your credit score.” says Shana Gurulé, whose company, MODERNIZE - Room Design & Organization, specializes in residential organizing, home staging and interior design in the Santa Fe and Los Alamos area “You will be able to find items so you don’t buy more, and you’ll save time by not searching for the things you already have. And having a de-cluttered home with ample storage space is essential when your home is on the market, selling faster and for more money.”
“My clients usually find many items that they no longer want or need. Holding a garage sale or selling on eBay is a great way to make some money and create space for the things you really cherish,” says Hazel Thornton, whose Organized For Life specializes in customizing systems for her residential and small business clients. “Reducing time spent looking for papers and files increases efficiency. Organized clients keep better track of receipts, inventory and revenue. Some of my clients have even found uncashed checks!”
Here are a few more ways that professional organizers can save clients money:
- Repurpose common items like shoe and check boxes, egg cartons and old china into drawer dividers or storage boxes. This means you won’t buy special holders for them.
- Many kitchen appliances and gadgets have dual purposes. Don’t buy a separate chopper or blender when a chef’s knife and a cheese grater do the same work.
